What is the second instalment of the visa application charge?
The second instalment of the visa application charge is a charge that applies to some applicants for General Skilled Migration.
The second instalment of the visa application charge only applies to members of your family unit. The charge must be paid before a visa can be granted. You should not, however, pay the second instalment of the visa application charge until requested to do so by the department.
Do all applicants need to pay the second instalment of the visa application charge?
Members of your family unit will be required to pay a second instalment visa application charge if they:
are aged 18 years or over
are included in your application
have been assessed as not having functional English language skills
Form 990i Charges (Fees) list the current charges for the second instalment of the visa application charge for each visa category.
See: Form 990i Charges (Fees)
Payment of the second visa application charge will entitle members of your family unit to English language tuition in Australia so that they can achieve functional English language ability. Applicants who are required to pay this charge will receive information about the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) and where they can receive tuition when their visa is granted. Further information on the Adult Migrant English Program is available.
See: Learning English
Fact Sheet 94 English Language Tuition for Adult Migrants
How is the second instalment different from the first instalment?
The first instalment of the visa application charge must accompany your General Skilled Migration visa application and is generally not refunded if your application is unsuccessful. This payment, known as the 'first instalment', covers the cost of processing your visa application.
Form 990i Charges (Fees) list the current charges for the first instalment of the visa application charge for each visa category. You are advised to check this information immediately before lodging your application. Payment of an incorrect fee will result in your application being determined to be invalid.
See: Form 990i Charges (Fees)
Skill matching category
If you are applying for a Skill Matching (subclass 134) visa there is no initial visa application charge. If you are subsequently nominated by either a State or Territory government or an employer, you will then be required to pay the visa application charge.
In addition to this charge you will also be required to pay a second instalment visa application charge for every dependant aged 18 years or over who is assessed as not having functional English language skills. You must also pay any other charges incurred in meeting the requirements for this visa.
If you have been assessed as having 'functional' English and are nominated by the South Australian or Tasmanian government, then acceptable arrangements must be made to upgrade skills to the 'vocational English' level, including payment of the required amount to the English language service provider, before the visa is granted.
If your details have been on the Skill Matching Database for two years and you have not been nominated, your application will be refused. If your application is refused, you will not be required to pay any additional charges. |
