Introduction of JobReady Test for GSM visasfrom 1 January 2010

What is the JobReady Test?
The JobReady is currently being developed by the Government in consultation with
Industry and unions.  It will ensure that people who wish to migrate are able to participate
in the labour market in the area of their skills and knowledge.   
Applicants nominating a trade occupation and who apply for an onshore General Skilled
Migration (GSM) visa will be required to pass the JobReady Test.

What is the purpose of the JobReady Test?
A key aim of the GSM program is to provide ‘job ready’ applicants to Australian employe
ob ready migrants are more likely to find employment quickly, which leads to improved
ettlement outcomes for them.  

I have already applied for a GSM visa,  will I have to do the JobReady Test?

I started my Australian study this year and won’t finish until next year, will the
JobReady Test affect me?

If you apply for a GSM visa, other than the Skilled-Graduate (Subclass 485) or
Skilled-Regional (Subclass 887) visas, and your nominated occupation is a trade
occupation, you will have to meet the JobReady requirement.

When will Job Ready Test become effective?  

The JobReady Test will come into effect from 1 January 2010.  Onshore GSM applicants
who apply from this date will have to pass the Job Ready Test if they nominate a trade
occupation.  

Is the testing process for onshore applicants the same as offshore applications?

No. The offshore testing regime has been in place since 2007 and was a Council of
Australian Governments (COAG) initiative to improve skills assessment processes,
particularly for licensed trades.  The JobReady Test may vary between occupations.  

How much will it cost?

The cost is yet to be determined.

Is there an expiry date for a JobReady Test result?

This is yet to be determined.
