More babies were born in Australia last year than at any time in our national history.

A record 296,600 babies were born in Australia in 2008 — up by 11,400 on 2007 — in a surge that is set to put pressure maternity wards, schools and childcare facilities, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Boys were slightly more prevalent than girls, making up 51 per cent of births.

The nation's overall fertility rate climbed from 1.92 babies per woman in 2007 to 1.97 last year, the highest rate since 1977 (2.01).

''Improved economic conditions have a lot to do with it, and I include the baby bonus in that," Australian National University demographer Peter McDonald was quoted by the Sydney Morning Herald as saying.

"But there's something else, an increased public discussion of the importance of not waiting too long."

But the baby bonus may not be around for much longer, with the Federal Government considering abolishing the cash handout as one of several ways to slow Australia's population boom.

Federal Labor MP Kelvin Thompson announced a 14-point plan last night to slow the growth rate, including a drastic reduction in migrant intake and restricting benefits for families with three or more kids

联邦工党议员Kelvin Thompson昨晚宣布了一项14点计划以减缓人口增长，其中包括大幅减少移民配额和限制有三个或更多孩子家庭的补贴。

而且现在中国鼓励出生了，计划生育早放松了，不然中国20年后全是老头老太。

中国人口到2000万，生产力也会下降到2000万啊！
而且西汉的时候中国就2000万，那个时候中国人富吗？ 一个国家的富强和人口的关系实在太不是主要了～！！美国现在3个亿人口，比澳洲2000万不是照样富啊～！

    那美国跟澳洲比不恰当，美国起点是高科技，澳洲的起点人少资源多。中国2000万的时候就和现在澳洲一样，不需要生产了，光吃资源就已经了不得了，随便可以搞个旅游，来个教你半死不活的移民政策，眼睛点便宜劳动力。
