Types of VisaThis page answers the two questions:
  • What type of Visa do I require?
  • What type of medical examination do I require?
Please find you visa type below.
Permanent Visa
  • For people intending a lifetime stay in Australia. Visa codes begin with '1' or '3' or '8'.
  • DD or DE classes - Skilled permanent, former student, including sponsored. This is exclusively for successful students and/or holders for the UQ497 visa, seeking a permanent stay in Australia on the basis of skills. If you are applying for the DD or DE you must have a full, permanent health assessment especially for this application, and not rely on any other health assessments you have had for any other purposes, including permanent applications of any other sort. If you are in this category you should nominate for a "Permanent Visa" examination.
Permanent Visa Medical Examinations include:
  • Medical Examination by a HSA doctor
  • Chest X-ray by HSA or HSA-approved Radiologist
  • HIV Blood Test - Blood taken by a HSA nurse or by a HSA-approved    Pathologist service
  • Nurse Screening - eye test, height, weight, urine test
Children 10 years and younger do not normally require a Chest X-ray
Children 14 years and younger do not normally require a HIV blood test
If further tests are requested by the doctor, all costs are required to be paid for by the examinee (the person who requires the medical examination), at the time of examination.
Women examinee's please note:
  • If you are menstruating you may need to return after the examination for a repeat urine test.
  • If you are pregnant, you will not require a Chest X-ray until the baby is born but you will require a Hepatitis B blood test.
Temporary Visa
  • Visitor / Business Visa - for people visiting family, or for business meetings or tourism for short periods. Visa codes begin with '6' or '9'.
  • Temporary Residence Visas - for people who intend to come to Australia temporarily for business, study, longer, sponsored stays. Visa codes begin with '4' or '5'.
Temporary Visa Medical Examinations include
  • Medical Examination by a HSA doctor
  • Chest X-ray by HSA or HSA-approved Radiologist
  • Nurse Screening - eye test, height, weight, urine test
Children 10 years and younger do not normally require a Chest X-ray
If further tests are requested by the doctor all costs are required to be paid for by the examinee (the person who requires the medical examination, at the time of the examination).
Women examinee's please note:
  • If you are menstruating you may need to return after the examination for a repeat urine test.
  • If you are pregnant, you will not require a Chest X-ray until the baby is born but you will require a Hepatitis B blood test.
Please note: If you intend to apply for a permanent visa at a later date, please make an appointment for a permanent visa medical examination. You need to be aware that any medicals that you undertake are only valid for visa application purposes for a period of 12 months, or sometimes less, and must be valid at the time that your application is decided. If in doubt contact DIAC on 131 881 or contact your case officer.
Student Visa
  • For people wishing to undertake formal study in registered courses in Australia and who are not Australian permanent residents or applicants. (Although this is a type of Temporary Visa applicants should nominate for a "Student Visa" examination.)
Student Visa Medical Examinations include
  • Medical Examination by a HSA doctor
  • Chest X-ray by HSA or a HSA Approved Radiologist
  • Nurse Screening - eye test, height, weight, urine test
Children 10 years and younger normally do not require a Chest X-ray
